STARTING THERAPY · DALLAS IN-PERSON + VIRTUAL TX & SC

What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session in Texas

Starting therapy can feel like a big step—even if you know you need support. You might be wondering what to say, how honest to be, or whether you'll “do it right.” At Radiant Reflections Counseling Center in Dallas, TX, our goal is to make your first session feel grounding and safe, not overwhelming. Here's a gentle walkthrough of what you can expect.

It's completely normal to feel nervous or unsure

Many people tell me they waited months—or even years—to reach out because they weren't sure if their situation was “bad enough” or didn't know where to begin. If that's you, you're not behind and you're not alone.

You don't need the perfect words or a neatly organized timeline of your life. Your first session is truly a starting point, not a final exam.

Before your first session: forms, logistics, and choosing a time

Once you schedule with Radiant Reflections Counseling Center—whether in-person in Dallas, TX or virtually across Texas and South Carolina—you'll receive secure intake forms. These usually include:

  • Basic contact information and emergency contact.

  • A brief overview of your concerns or reasons for seeking therapy.

  • Policies, consent forms, and privacy practices (HIPAA).

These forms help us use your session time well and make sure your information is protected. You don't have to write your whole story here—just enough for us to have a snapshot of what's bringing you in.

What actually happens in your first therapy session

When your session begins, we'll start by helping you feel oriented and settled—whether that's offering water, making sure your camera and audio are working for online sessions, or simply taking a few breaths together.

From there, we'll usually cover:

  • A quick review of confidentiality and what it means for you.

  • What brought you to therapy right now (in this season of life).

  • Any symptoms, stressors, or patterns you've noticed (emotionally, mentally, relationally, or physically).

You're always welcome to share at your own pace. You can say, “I'm not ready to talk about that yet,” or “Can we come back to this later?” and we will respect that.

Questions your therapist may ask (and why)

To understand your story, your therapist might ask about:

  • Your current stressors at home, work, school, or in relationships.

  • Your support system—friends, community, loved ones, or other supportive spaces.

  • Sleep, appetite, energy, and any physical symptoms you've noticed.

  • Past experiences that might be connected to what you're facing now.

There are no “right answers.” These questions simply help us see the bigger picture so we can support you as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms.

Talking about goals—without pressure or perfection

At some point in your first session or early sessions, we'll gently explore what you hope will feel different because of therapy. You don't need a polished list of goals. It's okay if all you know is:

  • “I just don't want to feel this way anymore.”

  • “I want to understand myself better.”

  • “I want my relationships to feel healthier.”

Together, we'll turn those statements into gentle, realistic goals and talk about what pace feels right for you.

How you might feel after your first session

People describe leaving their first therapy session feeling a mix of things: lighter, emotional, hopeful, tired, relieved, or all of the above. You've just spent nearly an hour talking honestly about things you may have carried alone for a long time—it makes sense that your mind and body would need time to process.

Afterward, it can help to drink water, eat something nourishing, and give yourself a bit of quiet time if possible. You might jot down a few notes about what stood out or what you'd like to explore more next time.

Online vs in-person sessions

At Radiant Reflections Counseling Center, we offer both in-person sessions in Dallas, TX and virtual sessions across Texas and South Carolina. The core of therapy is the same in both formats: a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore what you're going through and what you need.

If you're unsure which to choose, we can talk through your options based on your schedule, comfort level, and what feels most supportive for you.
